The northeast winnipeg high school was given the green schools, green futures award for the prairies region during a commencement breakfast held june 26. The award is intended by tree canada, a not for profit manufacturer that encourages canadians to plant and care for trees in urban and rural environments, and fedex communicate canada. Elmwood was recognized for its efforts in the area of environmental durability.Some of its recent projects include wind turbines that powers two computers in the school library, a lets recycle program, and a number of vicinity cleaning projects. The school Pandora Charms UK had to sign up outlining its green credentials to be eligible for the award.Points were awarded for environmental school yards, decreasing waste, keeping energy, publishing caring school, and eco higher educational. As a local winner, elmwood received a plaque from tree canada and fedex and $1, 000 cash award.The college used the money to award $200 bursaries to five students. Grade 12 higher education grace wood and kelsey crotty, co presidents of the college student council, said it was great for their school to be recognized for its external efforts.
